Istanbul: The Municipal Council of Istanbul has elected Nuri Aslan as the interim mayor, succeeding Ekrem Imamoglu who has been embroiled in legal issues following his arrest on March 19 on corruption charges. The decision was made during a council session where Aslan received 177 out of 314 votes. According to Kuwait News Agency, the council is under the control of the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), which played a pivotal role in Aslan's election. Aslan is set to serve as the interim mayor until the conclusion of Imamoglu's five-year term. Imamoglu's arrest has stirred significant political activity, with the CHP nominating him on March 23 as its candidate for the upcoming presidential election. This move came amid widespread demonstrations supporting him. A court ruling on Sunday, March 23, has mandated that Imamoglu, along with 20 alleged accomplices, remain in custody as they face trial on charges related to corruption and terrorism.
