Brussels: European Commissioner for the Clean, Just, and Competitive Transition, Teresa Ribera, expressed concerns on Thursday about the US administration's decision to impose a 25 percent tariff on imported cars and auto parts. Ribera stated that the move is detrimental to the global car market's functionality, following US President Donald Trump's announcement.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Ribera addressed the press ahead of the EU's Environment Council meeting in Brussels, emphasizing the negative implications of the US tariffs. She remarked, "For the US tariffs, this is very bad news. We really regret that the American administration is playing against the well-functioning of the global car market and not allowing that we can compete in a level playing field context and allow innovation. I think this is bad for consumers and bad for industrialists." Ribera urged EU member states to focus on their own interests and collaborate to mitigate the impact on European companies.
Ribera further affirmed that the European Union is preparing to respond to the US tariffs on European car imports. She mentioned that the European Commission is currently evaluating the specifics of the US decision and assured that a response would be forthcoming.
