NATO condemns North Korean satellite launch

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg Wednesday “strongly condemned” the attempted military satellite launch by North Korea, using ballistic missile technology.

“This raises tensions and poses serious risks to the security of the region and beyond. It is in blatant breach of multiple United Nations Security Council Resolutions,” he said in a statement.

NATO calls on North Korea to cease these provocative actions and to return to dialogue in order to achieve sustainable peace and the complete and verifiable denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, he said.

“We stand together with our close partners in the region, the Republic of Korea and Japan,” added the NATO chief.

North Korea said Wednesday it launched a military spy satellite earlier in the day, but the launch failed due to an engine problem, vowing to conduct a second launch “as soon as possible.”
