Kuwait City: The number of motorists' offenses, specifically related to the use of mobile phones while driving and failing to fasten seatbelts, reached 61,553 in the final quarter of 2024.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the total number of traffic accidents throughout 2024 was 65,991, resulting in 284 fatalities. Brigadier Mohammad Al-Subhan, director of coordination at the Ministry of Interior's (MoI) traffic department, highlighted these figures during a lecture at the Gulf Traffic Week seminar. The seminar, themed "driving without the phone," emphasized that up to 90 percent of these accidents were due to lack of attention and distraction, while 10 percent were attributed to vehicle malfunctions.
Brigadier Al-Subhan stressed the necessity for stricter penalties as a response to the growing number of violations. He elaborated that there were 1,926,320 cases of speeding in 2024, along with 174,793 offenses of running red lights. Offenses related to failing to fasten seatbelts amounted to 152,367, while those involving phone use and lack of focus reached 79,519. Additional violations included emitting loud noises from vehicles, reckless driving, and general negligence.
