Malaysians Demand Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Resignation Amid Rising Living Costs

Kuala lumpur: Thousands of Malaysians took to the streets on Saturday, calling on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to step down. They protested against high living costs and unmet electoral promises, among other issues. Protesters, who concluded their demonstration peacefully, expressed frustration over the lack of reforms Anwar had pledged since taking office in 2022. According to Kuwait News Agency, approximately 80,000 people participated in the protest in the capital, as per police statistics, while the opposition estimated the crowd at about 200,000. Clad in black shirts and holding placards with messages like "Step down Anwar," the protesters accused the premier of failing to bring about tangible improvements in the everyday lives of Malaysians. Despite these accusations, the government reported strong economic indicators and a steady flow of foreign investments. Demonstrators compiled a list of 100 reasons for demanding Ibrahim's resignation, including high living costs, nepotism, political interference in government partnerships, among other grievances.
