Kuala lumpur: Malaysia and South Africa have reiterated their unwavering support for Palestine, emphasizing the inalienable right of Palestinians to self-determination and the establishment of a sovereign and independent state. This declaration was made in a joint statement by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa during his official visit to Malaysia, which coincides with the 47th summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and relevant meetings in Kuala Lumpur from October 26-28.
According to Kuwait News Agency, both leaders called for a fair and inclusive solution to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region. They affirmed their support for international initiatives aimed at reaching an unconditional, immediate, and permanent ceasefire. Additionally, they demanded the lifting of the blockade on Gaza, ensuring the unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid, and the protection of all civilians.
The joint statement highlighted the necessity of adhering to an international system based on the UN Charter, including the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations. It emphasized that military action should not be used as a means to resolve conflicts and stressed that enduring peace could be achieved through diplomacy, dialogue, and multilateral efforts.
During the discussions, President Ramaphosa congratulated Prime Minister Ibrahim on Malaysia's upcoming presidency of ASEAN in 2025. In response, the Malaysian premier praised South Africa's role during its chairmanship of the G-20 and its contributions to the BRICS group, which enhance common interests and cooperation.
The two leaders also underscored the importance of strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation in key areas such as trade, industry, defense, and education, as concluded in the statement.
