Macron Warns of “Massive” Sanctions for Russia’s Truce Violation

Kiev: France's President Emmanuel Macron cautioned on Saturday that Russia would face "massive" coordinated European and US sanctions if it broke a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine as of Monday. This warning was delivered during a press conference in Kiev, which included German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Poland and UK's Prime Ministers Donald Tusk and Keir Starmer respectively, and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, alongside Macron.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Macron emphasized, "In the event of a violation of this ceasefire, we have agreed that massive sanctions will be prepared and coordinated between Europeans and Americans." This statement underscores the unified stance of European and American leaders in response to potential violations by Russia.

Macron further noted that Washington would primarily be responsible for supervising adherence to the truce, which was proposed by Ukraine and its allies. He added that while permanent peace conditions would be discussed at a later stage, they were not deemed essential for the current ceasefire agreement.
