Lebanese Presidency Tasks Nawaf Salam with Forming New Government

Beirut: Judge Nawaf Salam was asked to form the new Lebanese government after gaining significant support from lawmakers, the Lebanese presidency stated on Monday.

According to Kuwait News Agency, after consultations, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri informed President Joseph Aoun about the results, leading the president to officially task premier-designate Salam with the formation of the new government, as confirmed by Antoine Shakir, director-general of the Lebanese presidency.

Salam, born in December 1953 in Beirut, garnered 84 votes from a total of 128 lawmakers, while the caretaker premier Najib Mikati received nine votes, Shakir mentioned. Salam is expected to return to Lebanon on Tuesday.

Salam hails from a prominent political family and was elected president of the International Court of Justice in 2024 for a three-year term. His extensive experience includes serving as Lebanon's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations from 2007 to 2017, along with holding senior roles at various international agencies and institutions.
