Lebanese Army Troop Levels in South to Reach 10,000 by Year-End: President

Beirut: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun announced that the number of Lebanese Army forces stationed south of the Litani River will be increased to 10,000 troops by the end of the year. This move is part of a strategic plan to ensure security and stability along the borders following the expected withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces.

According to Kuwait News Agency, President Aoun made this declaration during a reception at the Presidential Palace with Major General Diodato Abagnara, the Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The president emphasized that the Lebanese Army is committed to implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 and will assume responsibility for all positions currently occupied by UN peacekeeping forces. This transition is set to occur following the gradual pullout of UNIFIL forces from the south, which is planned to be completed by the end of 2027.

The United Nations Secretary-General had announced in August a plan to conclude the UNIFIL mandate by December 31, 2026. The plan outlines the downsizing of the peacekeeping force beginning from this date, with a complete withdrawal expected within the following year.
