Kuwait’s Historical Milestones Marked by Achievements and Challenges

Kuwait city: The history of Kuwait is punctuated by significant events and achievements that have shaped the nation's trajectory. On this day, several historical milestones are remembered, spanning from economic decisions to cultural achievements and international recognition.

According to Kuwait News Agency, one notable event occurred in 1956 when Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah signed a decree to ban the export of rice, flour, and sugar for 15 days. This decision was a response to rising food prices caused by the closure of the Suez Canal due to aggression in Egypt. The move was aimed at stabilizing the local market and ensuring the availability of essential goods for Kuwaitis during a period of international crisis.

In 1978, cultural history was made with the performance of the first children's play in Kuwait, "Sinbad the Sailor," written by Mahfoudh Abdulrahman and directed by Mansour Al-Mansour. The play, featuring actors Mohammad Al-Surayye, Istiqlal Ahmad, Khaled Al-Obaid, and Abdulrahman Al-Aql, marked a milestone in Kuwait's theatrical scene, showcasing the nation's commitment to nurturing the arts and providing entertainment for younger audiences.

The year 1991 saw another significant achievement when Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah personally extinguished the last of over 700 oil well fires that had been set alight by retreating Iraqi forces. This monumental task, accomplished in 240 days with the help of teams from Kuwait and ten other countries, symbolized the resilience and determination of Kuwait in the face of adversity.

In the realm of governance, 2006 marked the passage of a bill by the Kuwait National Assembly requiring shareholding and closed companies to contribute one percent of their net profits to the state's budget. This legislative move was aimed at bolstering the country's financial resources and ensuring sustainable economic development.

A year later, in 2007, Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah established the Government Performance Follow-Up Agency (GPF) through a decree. The agency, supervised by the Prime Minister, was tasked with improving the performance of ministries and government agencies, reflecting Kuwait's commitment to enhancing governmental efficiency and accountability.

The international presence of Kuwait was further solidified in 2012 when Sheikh Ali Jaber Al-Sabah, Governor of Capital (Assima) Governorate, inaugurated Kuwait Road in Bisceglie, Italy. This marked the first road in Europe to be named after Kuwait, symbolizing the nation's growing diplomatic ties and international recognition.

In 2018, Kuwait experienced severe weather conditions as heavy rains paralyzed traffic and led to the shutdown of all public institutions nationwide, showcasing the nation's vulnerability to natural events and the need for robust infrastructure and emergency response systems.

Kuwait's achievements in sports were highlighted in 2019 when Talal Al-Reshidi won the Trap Competition of the Asian Shooting Championship in Qatar, subsequently qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics 2020. This accomplishment underscored the talent and competitive spirit present within Kuwait's sporting community.

The year 2022 was marked by two significant advancements: the Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC) began commercial operations at Al-Zour Refinery, the largest in the world, and Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital conducted the first endoscopy procedure using artificial intelligence, aimed at detecting tumors in the colon and stomach. These achievements highlighted Kuwait's progress in industrial capacity and medical technology.

Looking ahead, 2024 is set to be a year of humanitarian and environmental milestones for Kuwait. The Ministry of Health's Kuwait Center for Disease Prevention and Control launched the global Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS) to monitor and analyze public health information worldwide. In the same year, a Kuwaiti transport plane delivered humanitarian and medical aid to Beirut to support Lebanon amidst Israeli occupation aggression. Additionally, Kuwait Oil Tankers Company (KOTC) was awarded the Green Maritime Transport Award for its efforts in environmental protection, showcasing Kuwait's commitment to sustainable practices.

These events, spanning several decades, illustrate Kuwait's resilience, innovation, and commitment to progress across various domains.
