Kuwait’s Historical Milestones in Finance, Health, and Governance

Kuwait city: Today marks several significant milestones in Kuwait's history, spanning finance, healthcare, and governance. Events on this date highlight the country's progress in establishing pivotal institutions and achieving notable accomplishments on the international stage.

According to Kuwait News Agency, in 1979, Kuwait Finance House commenced operations as the first Islamic bank in Kuwait, following its establishment by an Amiri Decree on March 23, 1977. A year later, in 1980, the Central Bank of Kuwait introduced the third issue of the national currency, the Kuwaiti Dinar, with the 20 Dinar banknote debuting in February 1986.

In the healthcare sector, 1984 saw the opening of Al-Razi Orthopedic Hospital, equipped with 306 beds across 10 wards. On the international front, in 1997, Kuwaiti national Fawzi Al-Sultan was re-elected as President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, marking a first for Kuwait in holding such a senior international role.

Sports achievements were also recorded in 2005 when Salmiya SC secured the Gulf Handball Cup for the fourth time after a narrow victory over Sharjah of the UAE. A year later, in 2006, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah was unanimously voted as Crown Prince by the Kuwait National Assembly and subsequently took the oath of office.

In 2013, the National Assembly passed a bill to establish a National Fund for Small and Medium Enterprises Development, forwarding it to the government for implementation. This initiative was followed in 2014 by Kuwait Petroleum International's acquisition of Shell's operations in Italy, encompassing fuel stations, storage tanks, and aircraft fuel supply.

The same year, the Ministry of Interior inaugurated a museum in downtown Kuwait, showcasing the history of the nation's police force through vehicles, equipment, weapons, uniforms, and documents. Looking to the future, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed in 2025 with Gustave Roussy, a French oncology hospital, to enhance Kuwait's healthcare system.
