Kuwait’s Historical Milestones: From Oil Discoveries to World Championships


Kuwait city: A series of significant events have marked Kuwait’s progress over the years, shaping its economic, social, and cultural landscape. These milestones reflect the country’s ongoing development and its contributions to various fields.

According to Kuwait News Agency, in 1974, a pivotal agreement was signed by Kuwait Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah with British Petroleum and Gulf Kuwait. This agreement focused on the proceeds and income tax related to natural gas and LPG, highlighting Kuwait’s strategic moves in the energy sector. The same year witnessed the Ministry of Social Affairs establishing the Kuwait Sport Club for the Deaf, showcasing the nation’s commitment to inclusivity.

Fast forward to 1995, a significant discovery was announced in Kar’a Al-Marou, west of Kuwait. The oil reserves found were estimated at 350 million barrels, underscoring Kuwait’s vital role in the global oil industry. By 2002, further development was prioritized as Kuwait Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah signed
a decree to establish the citizens’ services authority. This entity was tasked with evaluating government department performance and addressing any shortcomings.

In 2003, the Abdulmohsen Al-Kharafi Dyslexia Center was inaugurated at the Physical Therapy Hospital. This center marked a first in Muslim countries, emphasizing Kuwait’s leadership in healthcare and education for individuals with learning disabilities.

The year 2019 saw the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) take a significant step by signing a KD 26-million loan agreement with Egypt. This loan aimed to finance a major road in Sharm Al-Sheikh, aligning with development plans for the Sinai Peninsula.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Kuwaiti jet skier Yousef Al-Abdulrazzaq made headlines in 2020 by winning the International Motorboating Union’s (UIM) 2020 (GP1) and (Slalom) divisions’ world championships held in Kuwait. His victory was a testament to Kuwait’s strength in international sports competitions.
