Kuwait’s Historical Milestones: From Defense Treaties to Nuclear Safety

Kuwait city: The history of Kuwait is marked by significant events that have shaped the nation's development and global standing. On this day in 1962, the late Kuwait Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah issued a decree establishing the Kuwait Public Transport Company (KPTC) with a capital of KD one million (USD 3.2 million).

According to Kuwait News Agency, another notable event occurred in 1991 when Kuwait and the United States of America signed a 10-year defense treaty. This agreement aimed to protect Kuwait from external threats and promote peace and stability within the Gulf region. In 1994, Kuwait furthered its commitment to safety by signing the Convention on Nuclear Safety to ensure maximum safety at nuclear reactors.

In the realm of sports, 2000 marked a historic achievement for Kuwait when shooter Fehaid Al-Daihani secured the country's first Olympic medal by finishing third in the double trap competition during the 27th Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

Kuwait's involvement in international organizations was highlighted in 2001 when the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) elected Kuwait as a member of its Board of Governors. The following year, the Ministry of Communications enhanced international connectivity by reducing rates for international calls by up to 70 percent with certain countries.

The year 2010 saw Kuwait strengthening its international partnerships through a memorandum of cooperation with Russia on the peaceful usage of nuclear energy. Additionally, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) provided a KD 5.9 million (USD 19.3 million) loan to Kenya to improve its transport sector. In 2018, KFAED also signed an agreement with Jordan to reschedule debts totaling USD 300.7 million.

Kuwait's leadership roles in international organizations were further solidified in 2021 when the country chaired the IAEA's 65th session for the first time since becoming a member five decades earlier. In 2022, the seismological center reported a 3.3 magnitude earthquake near Al-Abdali, underscoring the region's seismic activity.

Most recently, in 2023, Kuwait's ministry of oil announced its success in securing four seats in the executive committees of the World Petroleum Council, covering the period from 2023 to 2026. These milestones collectively reflect Kuwait's progression across various domains, from infrastructure and international cooperation to sports and global governance.
