Kuwait city: The history of Kuwait is marked by a series of significant events that have shaped its present and continue to influence its future. One of these pivotal moments was the condemnation of Iraq's invasion of Kuwait by the Council of the Arab League during an extraordinary session in Cairo. The condemnation came in the wake of Iraq's aggression against the State of Kuwait in 1990.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) also expressed its condemnation during an extraordinary meeting held in Cairo, Egypt, and demanded the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Iraqi forces to positions before August 1, 1990. In the same year, Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah took a decisive step by signing a law that restricted the sale or purchase of Kuwait oil or by-products to transactions conducted solely through the government of Kuwait.
Fast forward to 1998, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Works made a progressive move by appointing Dr. Nouriya Al-Kharafi and Kawthar Al-Jo'an to the board of Ardhiya Cooperative Society, marking the first time women occupied such positions in Cooperative Societies. In 2010, Dr. Ayed Al-Humaidan was recognized by the UN for his expertise in reducing drug demands, preparing preventive measures, and implementing rehabilitation programs.
The same year, Kuwait's sailing team achieved international acclaim in a competition hosted by Morocco. Kuwaiti champion Saud Al-Masoud triumphed in the laser category, while Ahmad Al-Failakawi secured the first position in the laser radial competition. By 2015, Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity and Water responded to the growing energy demands with the inauguration of the Al-Sabbiya power station project.
In 2016, Kuwait's ministry for public works completed a KD-28-million project for an expatriate housing complex in Al-Shadadiya, transferring it to the Ministry of Finance. That year also saw the establishment of a new chair for a Master program in contemporary Arabic Studies at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain, by the Abdulaziz Saud Al-Babtain Foundation.
The passing of Suad Al-Humaidhi in 2017 marked the loss of one of the first Kuwaiti women involved in trade and investment both within and outside Kuwait. In 2018, Kuwait demonstrated its commitment to humanitarian efforts by contributing USD 50 million to the World Food Program for the benefit of the Yemeni people.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the government urged citizens traveling abroad to obtain health insurance covering treatment for injuries or accidents. Additionally, it imposed entry restrictions on expatriates from certain countries as part of its countermeasures against the virus. In 2022, the Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) made strides in environmental responsibility by exporting its first shipment of low-sulfur, low-aromatic gasoline to Asian markets, meeting international environmental standards.
