Kuwait’s Historical Contributions: Significant Milestones from Diplomacy to Development


Kuwait city: Today marks several significant milestones in the history of Kuwait, highlighting the country’s active role in international diplomacy, development, and humanitarian efforts. Throughout the years, Kuwait has demonstrated a commitment to peace, economic cooperation, and global welfare.



According to Kuwait News Agency, the State of Kuwait took a notable step in international diplomacy when it sent eight observers to join the Arab League’s conciliation committee aimed at monitoring a ceasefire in Yemen. This move positioned Kuwait as the second nation, following Algeria, to contribute observers to this peacekeeping effort.



In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly elected Kuwait to represent the Asian Group in the UN Security Council for the 1978-79 term. This election marked a historic achievement as it was the first time a Gulf country held such a position.



In the realm of international relations, 1990 saw a pivotal meeting between Kuwait’s Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The discussions focused on Iraq’s invasion and occupation of Kuwait, underscoring the geopolitical challenges the nation faced.



The year 2009 was marked by the passing of Talal Al-Ayyar, a former Member of Parliament and Minister of Electricity and Water, as well as Social Affairs and Labor. He was remembered for his contributions to Kuwait’s development.



In 2013, Kuwait Petroleum International (KPI) inaugurated the Nghi Son project in Vietnam, a significant venture in refining and petrochemicals with a cost of USD nine billion, showcasing Kuwait’s investment in global energy infrastructure.



Furthering its commitment to global health, in 2017, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) signed a USD four million grant agreement with the World Health Organization (WHO) to combat tropical diseases in Africa. The same year, Kuwait donated USD 15 million at an international donor conference in Geneva to assist Rohingya refugees.



A landmark in sustainable energy was achieved in 2021 when KPI supplied Gatwick Airport in London with its first shipment of sustainable fuel oil, marking Kuwait’s contribution to greener aviation practices.



In 2022, Kuwait’s State Audit Bureau (SAB) secured membership in three committees of the Arab Organization for Supreme Audit Institutions (ARABOSAI) for a three-year term, reflecting its influence in regional audit governance.



Most recently, in 2024, the Kuwait Capital Markets Authority (CMA) announced its achievement of the international standardization certificate (ISO/IEC) for information technology services, signifying a commitment to excellence in IT service management.
