According to Kuwait News Agency, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has consistently emphasized the importance of unity for a better future. In his inaugural address following his constitutional oath before the National Assembly on December 20, 2023, he stressed the gravity of the challenges facing the nation, asserting that upholding national unity is essential.
Kuwait's first National Day celebration was held on June 19, 1962, marked by a grand military parade at the old airport. This event was attended by numerous officials and citizens in an atmosphere of joy and pride. On that day, the late Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah delivered a speech, expressing joy and determination as Kuwait embarked on a path toward prosperity and social justice.
Initially celebrated annually on June 19, National Day was later merged with the anniversary of the late Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah's accession, moving the celebration to February 25, as per an Amiri decree on May 18, 1964. Since gaining independence in 1961, Kuwait has worked to strengthen its political system. In 1962, a Constituent Assembly was formed to draft a constitution based on democratic principles reflecting Kuwait's realities and aspirations.
This constitution, approved by the late Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah in November 1962, marked the beginning of constitutional legitimacy. The first parliamentary elections followed on January 23, 1963. Over the decades, Kuwait has achieved significant progress in development, continuing the vision laid out by its forefathers and advanced by successive generations under wise leadership.
