Kuwaiti Researcher Records Greater Flamingo in Jahra Nature Reserve

Jahra: A Kuwaiti researcher from the Environment Public Authority, Omar Al-Shaheen, has documented the presence of a four-year-old female Greater Flamingo at the Jahra Nature Reserve. Al-Shaheen observed the bird's leg ring and subsequently contacted specialized organizations in France, confirming that it was ringed in Camargue, southern France, in August 2021.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Al-Shaheen mentioned that the Greater Flamingo is frequently seen in Kuwait's tidal mudflats along Shuwaikh and Sulaibikhat beaches, as well as at the Jahra Reserve. This observation underscores Kuwait's strategic importance as a significant migratory corridor for various European birds. The flamingo, known for its pink color, stands approximately 130 centimeters tall with a wingspan of 155 centimeters. Its diet mainly consists of algae and microorganisms, which contribute to its pink pigmentation.

Al-Shaheen further noted that flamingos are recognized for their social behavior, often forming large flocks. This social structure not only protects them from natural predators but also enhances the efficiency of their food searches.
