Kuwaiti Campaign Highlights Increased Skin Cancer Risk Due to Sun Exposure

Kuwait city: Kuwait's Cancer Awareness Nation (CAN) issued a warning on Tuesday about the significant increase in skin cancer risk due to excessive direct sun exposure during the summer, urging the public to adopt preventive measures and undergo regular skin checks. The campaign, titled "Safe Under the Sun," was launched by CAN to promote awareness of skin cancer, which is among the most common cancers globally.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Dr. Khaled Al-Saleh, Oncologist and Chairman of CAN, stated that while skin cancer is prevalent worldwide, many cases can be prevented or detected early, which significantly enhances the chances of survival. Official data from 2020 indicated that Kuwait recorded 24 skin cancer cases, representing 7.3 percent of all cancer cases in the country, with eight cases among Kuwaitis and 16 among non-Kuwaitis.

Dr. Al-Saleh highlighted early warning signs of skin cancer, including new moles or spots, changes in existing moles, and non-healing sores or scaly patches. He emphasized the importance of using sunscreen, avoiding peak sun exposure hours, wearing protective clothing, and conducting regular self or clinical skin examinations.

The treatments for skin cancer vary depending on the type and stage, ranging from local surgery, cryotherapy, and laser procedures to modern immunotherapies and medications. As part of the "Safe Under the Sun" campaign, CAN plans to distribute educational materials and organize awareness events in shopping malls in collaboration with the Health Ministry and other partners.
