Kuwait Reaffirms Commitment to UN Charter and Human Rights

New york: The State of Kuwait reiterated its steadfast commitment to the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and International Humanitarian Law. Speaking at a special session of the UN General Assembly on the Human Rights Council's report, Wafiqah Al-Mulla, second secretary of the Permanent Mission of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations, emphasized Kuwait's dedication to these international frameworks.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Al-Mulla highlighted the pivotal role of the UN Human Rights Council in promoting these rights at both international and regional levels. Kuwait, under the leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, remains committed to values such as international peace and security, respect for state sovereignty, and the promotion of justice and equality.

Al-Mulla stressed the importance of the Universal Periodic Review mechanism, a tool of the Human Rights Council, for fostering dialogue and cooperation among member states. Since joining the UN Human Rights Council in 2024, Kuwait has organized numerous workshops and panel discussions on issues including child and disability rights, women's empowerment, and combating human trafficking.

The State of Kuwait has received 290 recommendations in the last review, accepting 206, partially accepting 35, and noting 49. Al-Mulla indicated that this acceptance reflects Kuwait's commitment to aligning actionable recommendations with its national plans, including those outlined in Kuwait Vision 2035.

Kuwait is seeking re-election to the Human Rights Council for the 2027-2029 term, continuing its active role in supporting human rights issues globally. Al-Mulla reaffirmed Kuwait's belief in the UN's three pillars: human rights, security and peace, and development, which require international cooperation and dialogue.

The Kuwaiti diplomat underscored Kuwait's respect for human rights, asserting that they are universal and should be enjoyed without discrimination. She expressed appreciation for the Human Rights Council's efforts in promoting and protecting human rights and called for strengthened multilateral cooperation to address global challenges.

Al-Mulla condemned violations by Israeli authorities against Palestinians and Lebanon, urging international accountability and adherence to humanitarian law. Kuwait supports Palestinian self-determination and the establishment of an independent state, welcoming ceasefire efforts mediated by regional and international partners.

Addressing the situations in Yemen and Sudan, Al-Mulla expressed concern over the human rights crises in these countries and called for respect for humanitarian law and the protection of civilians. Kuwait advocates for the safe delivery of humanitarian aid in conflict zones.
