Kuwait Oil Tanker Rescues 45 Refugees Off Greek Coast

Kuwait city: Kuwait's oil tanker, Bahra, saved the lives of 45 refugees in the Mediterranean Sea, off Greece coast, on Monday evening, Acting CEO of Kuwait Oil Tankers Company (KOTC) Sheikh Khaled Ahmad Al-Sabah said on Tuesday.

According to Kuwait News Agency, this is a new humanitarian act added to the company's record. Sheikh Khaled Ahmad Al-Sabah noted that the refugees were onboard a boat, which was out of service in the sea at 4:00 pm (Kuwait time). Greece's rescue and research center informed that there is a boat 60 miles away from Greece coast.

Immediately, the tanker was informed to offer required support and humanitarian assistance, as well as basic needs like water, food, and temporary sheltering on the tanker's board. After rescuing the refugees, the tanker resumed its trip to the Greek island of Crete, where they peacefully landed and were handed over to Greek authorities.

He pointed that another Kuwaiti oil tanker, Dasma, rescued 40 refugees on July 12, and Salmi Tanker also saved the lives of 536 off Italian coast, one of the largest rescue operations in the world. Sheikh Khaled stressed that safety and protecting maritime environment are two of the company's top priorities, in line with its efforts aiming to bring together humanitarian and moral values.
