Kuwait city: Minister of Oil and President of the Supreme Environmental Council Dr. Tareq Al-Roumi announced that the 27th meeting of the GCC environment officials concluded with full consensus and 18 recommendations related to international treaties. Dr. Al-Roumi stated that the officials agreed on the necessity for GCC states to continue acting as a unified entity at international conferences and forums concerning environmental issues.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Acting Director General of the Environment Public Authority Nof Behbehani stated that key recommendations included the approval of establishing a Gulf center for environmental studies and climate change, which will be headquartered in Oman. The officials approved a draft system for managing waste materials under the Montreal Protocol and agreed to complete joint statistical tasks to prepare for setting the Gulf environmental index.
Furthermore, the participants agreed to finalize administrative and financial procedures to survey air quality and its impact on public health in GCC countries. They also decided to allocate an award for successful environmental and ecological initiatives, to be granted biennially. In addition, they expressed support for Oman during its chairmanship of the seventh session of the UN environmental assembly, scheduled for early December, and affirmed unified positions on international treaties regarding plastic waste, desertification, and climate change.
