Kuwait Geopark Project Aims to Boost Tourism Sector

Kuwait city: Minister of Information and Culture Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi has announced plans to transform the land of the Kuwait Geopark into a significant tourist attraction. Al-Mutairi, who is also the Minister of State for Youth Affairs, emphasized the project's potential to convert challenges into opportunities for all stakeholders involved, aiming for shared success during an inspection tour of the site on Saturday.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the Ministry of Information is overseeing the project, which is being executed by the Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) in collaboration with the Touristic Enterprises Company, the Kuwait Geosciences Society, and other state bodies. The minister's recent meeting with representatives from both government and private sectors aimed to ensure the integrated implementation of this initiative. The project is designed to highlight Kuwait's distinctive geological, climatic, and environmental characteristics, along with those of the Gulf states, through a range of tourist-attractive activities.

Kuwait Geopark represents an ambitious effort by the Ministry of Information to foster partnerships with various governmental and non-governmental entities, opening new horizons for the country's tourism system. KOC's Deputy CEO for Planning and Innovation, Mohammad Khalifa Al-AbdulJaleel, highlighted the exceptional historical and archaeological significance of the site, which dates back to the Ubaid period (c. 5500-4900 BC), a prehistoric era marking the rise of civilization and early human settlement in West Asia and the Gulf region.

Al-AbdulJaleel noted that KOC is responsible for the construction and development of the Geopark due to its extensive technical experience and its national role in supporting cultural and environmental projects. The site, located north of Kuwait Joon (bay), features remarkable landscapes, including Martian-like outcrops in the Subiya desert and escarpments in Jal Az-Zor, which may qualify it for inclusion on the UNESCO Global Geoparks list.
