Kuwait city: The Kuwait Dive Team (KDT), affiliated with the Environmental Voluntary Foundation (EVF), participated in a significant cleanup operation at Al-Zor beaches, successfully removing tons of plastic, wood waste, and discarded nets from the seabed.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the team's chief, Walid Al-Fadhel, stated that the initiative coincided with the International Volunteer Day, observed on December 5. Al-Fadhel highlighted that the theme for this year's event, "Every contribution matters," was designed to encourage group action and participation.
He further explained that the annual occasion was established by the United Nations in 1985 to recognize volunteers and raise public awareness about their contributions. Al-Fadhel stressed the dangers posed by plastic waste to ecosystems and marine life, referencing a UN report indicating that plastic waste results in the death of millions of birds globally each year, along with one million marine creatures, including turtles.
The team is committed to continuing its efforts by removing abandoned boats and fishing nets entangled with coral reefs. They also plan to keep launching campaigns aimed at environmental preservation.
In addition to their cleanup efforts, the Dive Team had recently set up a pavilion at the International Kuwait Book Fair to promote their initiatives and engage with the public.
