Kuwait Commemorates Second Anniversary of Late Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad’s Passing

Kuwait city: On the second anniversary of the passing of the late Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Kuwait reflects on his leadership that spanned nearly three years. During his tenure, Sheikh Nawaf focused on fostering development, maintaining stability, and enhancing Kuwait's regional and global stature. Although December 16, 2023, marked the date of his departure, his legacy and achievements continue to hold a significant place in Kuwait's history.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the late Amir's influence extended over nearly six decades, leaving a profound impact on the institutions he guided. His leadership was marked by an emphasis on institutional growth, workforce development, and the enhancement of Kuwait's presence both regionally and globally. Sheikh Nawaf assumed leadership on September 29, 2020, following the passing of his brother, the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, becoming Kuwait's 16th ruler in accordance with the Constitution.

Born on June 25, 1937, Sheikh Nawaf was the sixth son of the late Amir Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Kuwait's 10th ruler. He pursued his education in various Kuwaiti schools, including Sharq and Al-Mubarakiya, earning respect for his dedication to learning and his mentors.

Sheikh Nawaf's political career began post-independence in 1962 when he was appointed Governor of Hawally by the late Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah. He became Minister of Interior on March 19, 1978, with a primary focus on national security. In January 1988, he transitioned to the role of Minister of Defense, where he modernized the military and enhanced the Kuwaiti Army's capabilities.

During the Iraqi invasion and occupation of Kuwait in 1990-91, Sheikh Nawaf played a crucial role in leading resistance efforts and ensuring the safe relocation of Kuwait's Amir to Saudi Arabia while commanding the army. After Kuwait's liberation in 1991, he was appointed Minister of Social Affairs and, subsequently, Deputy Chief of the National Guard on October 17, 1992.

Sheikh Nawaf returned as Minister of Interior on July 13, 2003, and was later named First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior on October 16. Before ascending to the role of Amir in 2020, he served as Crown Prince following a decree by the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on February 7, 2006. His contributions over 14 years were pivotal to Kuwait's development and stability.
