Vienna: Director General of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) Dr. Faisal Al-Humaidan announced that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has accredited KISR's radiation measurements laboratory as a regional center for environmental radiation monitoring as part of the Cooperative Agreement for Arab States in Asia for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology (ARASIA).
According to Kuwait News Agency, this announcement was made during Al-Humaidan's participation in the 69th IAEA General Conference held in Vienna. He emphasized that the accreditation is a recognition of the laboratory's technical competencies, its advanced quality systems, and its history of collaboration with countries in the region through IAEA projects focused on environmental radiological monitoring.
Al-Humaidan highlighted that the laboratory's achievement will bolster regional capabilities in monitoring environmental radioactivity, standardizing measurement and sampling methods, and facilitating data exchange to support environmental protection and public health in Kuwait and the surrounding region. The laboratory plays a critical role in responding to radiological or nuclear incidents by collecting and analyzing environmental samples to provide accurate data for crisis management in line with international standards. It also issues periodic reports confirming the safety of the Kuwaiti environment from radioactive contamination by monitoring radiation levels in air, water, and food.
The laboratory is noted for being among the most advanced in the region, equipped with specialized devices for measuring gamma, alpha, and beta radiation, and advanced systems for monitoring radon gas. It also features laboratories for preparing environmental samples in accordance with the highest standards. The laboratory applies a quality system that adheres to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard to ensure accuracy and reliability of results and participates regularly in the ALMERA International Comparison Program organized by the IAEA, which strengthens the credibility of its data and reinforces its status as an accredited regional scientific reference.
In conclusion, Al-Humaidan stated that Kuwait aims to serve its nation and enhance its regional stature through this scientific achievement, under the leadership of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, His Highness the Crown Prince, and His Highness the Prime Minister.
