Amb. Al-Fassam: Kuwait Committed to Enhancing Technical Cooperation with IAEA

Kuwait city: Kuwait is committed to enhancing technical cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and supporting its programs in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, said Kuwait's Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Talal Al-Fassam.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Ambassador Al-Fassam, in his speech at the 69th session of the IAEA General Conference, affirmed that Kuwait continues to implement joint projects with the Agency, including the preparation of the Fourth National Cooperation Programme Framework Document (2026-2035).

Kuwait hosts four regional service and cooperation centers in cooperation with the IAEA concerned with medicine, the marine environment, and radiation protection. Additionally, the Environmental and Life Sciences Research Center at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research has been designated as a cooperation center with the agency to monitor radioactive contamination in the seas.

The Radioactivity Measurement Laboratory at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research has been accredited as a regional resource center for environmental radiation monitoring within the framework of the Arab States in West Asia (ARASIA). A memorandum of understanding was signed during the current conference.

Ambassador Al-Fassam highlighted that cooperation with the agency last year saw the implementation of significant projects, including combating and treating cancer, and monitoring marine microplastic pollution and its impact on seafood safety.

He emphasized Kuwait's position advocating for the right of all states to the peaceful use of nuclear energy in accordance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. He called on Iran to continue cooperating with the IAEA to address outstanding issues transparently and build international confidence. Kuwait welcomes the agreement to resume joint cooperation between Iran and the IAEA under Egyptian auspices.

The Ambassador affirmed Kuwait's commitment to establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East. He noted that all countries in the region have acceded to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), except Israel, which refuses to subject its nuclear facilities to comprehensive safeguards.

Al-Fassam pointed out "Israeli intransigence did not stop there, as its forces continue their aggression against the sisterly State of Qatar," stressing that Kuwait condemns this aggression, which threatens the security and stability of the region.
