Kuwait City: Today marks significant milestones in Kuwait's history, spanning from natural disasters to cultural achievements. The timeline of events begins in 1954 when the Kuwait government formed a special committee in response to torrential rains that demolished 500 houses. This panel, led by Sheikh Jaber Al-Ali Al-Sabah, was tasked with aiding residents in rebuilding their homes. According to Kuwait News Agency, in 1962, renowned medicine expert Ahmad Mohammad Al-Ghanim passed away at the age of 102. Al-Ghanim was a respected figure, not only for his medical expertise but also as a merchant and ship skipper. He was known for treating patients free of charge at his home clinic in the eastern part of Kuwait City. In 1965, a decree by Kuwait Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah established the country's 5th cabinet under Crown Prince Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. This 13-member government remained in office until January 28, 1967. The following year, in 1966, Al-Jahra Sports Club was founded, initially n amed Al-Shuhada Club, before being renamed to align with its city. The academic landscape saw a boost in 1974 with the establishment of Kuwait University's College of Engineering and Oil, which welcomed its first cohort of 90 students in the 1975-76 academic year. A decade later, in 1984, a Kuwaiti plane named Kadhma was hijacked en route to Dubai and Karachi, resulting in a six-day standoff in Tehran, Iran. Tragically, two American hostages were killed during this ordeal. Although the hijacking ended, the plane remained in Iran for 17 months before being retrieved in 1986. In 2007, Kuwait hosted the 11th Asian Shooting Championship, inaugurating the Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Olympic Shooting Complex. That same year, the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL) honored poet Ahmad Al-Saqqaf at the 14th Qurain Cultural Festival. Four years later, in 2011, the Italian city of Florence awarded its world prize for creativity to Kuwaiti poet Khalifa Al-Wugayyan. During this year, Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al -Sabah took a constitutional oath as Prime Minister, succeeding Sheikh Nasser Mohammad Al-Sabah. In 2012, the Kuwait Oil Company successfully contained an oil leak in one of its export pipelines. Further, in 2016, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) signed a loan agreement with Cairo for a sea desalination project in Egypt, alongside grants for solar energy feasibility and Syrian refugee support. In 2019, KFAED facilitated a KD 29.5 million loan deal with Bahrain for a power initiative. The year 2020 saw Dr. Salah Al-Ali awarded a gold medal at the Seoul International Invention Fair for his innovation related to preventing sudden child deaths during sleep. Additionally, Kuwait mourned the loss of prominent businessman Abdulaziz Mohammad Al-Shaye, who passed away at the age of 94.
