Tokyo: Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced on Tuesday that Japan will persist in its efforts to enhance the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. This commitment was declared during a meeting with Phillipe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
According to Kuwait News Agency, Ishiba and Lazzarini reaffirmed their dedication to working closely to support Palestine refugees who are currently facing a severe crisis. The meeting, held in Tokyo, was highlighted by a press release from Japan's Foreign Ministry, which emphasized the mutual commitment to assisting those in need.
In his remarks, Ishiba expressed his admiration for UNRWA's ongoing efforts to support Palestine refugees. He stated, "Japan will work on sustainably ensuring an enabling environment that allows humanitarian assistance activities." Lazzarini, in turn, expressed gratitude for Japan's support so far and provided an overview of the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. He outlined the challenges faced by UNRWA and its initiatives to improve governance and support structures.
According to Lazzarini, approximately 500,000 people in the war-torn Gaza Strip are currently facing starvation, underscoring the critical need for continued international support and intervention.
