Tokyo: Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Germany Chancellor Friedrich Merz have agreed to enhance cooperation between their nations and maintain close communication, as stated by Japan's Foreign Ministry. The commitment was made during a 30-minute phone conversation between the two leaders.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Ishiba emphasized the robust nature of Japan-German relations, citing the Japan-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations as an example of their deepening ties. He expressed optimism about collaborating closely with Merz, who recently assumed office. Merz, in turn, conveyed his eagerness to work with Ishiba and reinforce the bilateral relationship.
Ishiba noted the significant advancements in security cooperation between the two countries and commended Germany's increased engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. He expressed a desire to bolster economic security collaboration. Merz responded by affirming Germany's commitment to partnering with Japan in various sectors, notably the economy, recognizing Japan as a key ally in Asia.
The discussions also covered a range of economic issues, particularly the repercussions of US tariff measures on the global economy and the multilateral free trade system. Additionally, the leaders exchanged views on European and Indo-Pacific affairs, including the situation in Ukraine, and pledged to address international challenges collectively.
