Rafah: The Israeli occupation army announced plans to reopen the Rafah land crossing in the coming days, specifically for patients and injured individuals seeking to leave Gaza. This development is anticipated to provide a critical humanitarian channel for those needing medical attention outside the region.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the crossing will function under a previously established mechanism, which includes medical evacuations contingent upon security approvals. The process will involve coordination with Egypt and supervision by the European Union. The Rafah crossing serves as the only passage for Palestinians to connect with the outside world. Thousands, including patients, wounded individuals, and students, have been stranded on both sides of the crossing due to its prolonged closure.
The reopening was initially slated to occur shortly after a ceasefire began on October 11; however, the Israeli occupation delayed the implementation. They insisted that the return of all bodies of Israeli occupation captives held by Palestinian groups in Gaza was a prerequisite for reopening the crossing.
The situation at Rafah worsened significantly after May 6, 2024, when the Israeli occupation forces stormed the crossing, destroying it and halting the movement of travelers and goods. This action further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, highlighting the critical need for reopening the crossing to alleviate the suffering of the affected populations.
