Khan younis: Israeli occupation forces announced on Wednesday that it has completed the opening of a new route in southern Gaza that effectively splits Khan Younis, the territory's second-largest city, into two parts.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the new 15-kilometer corridor, named Magen Oz which translates to Shield of Courage, has significant military and political implications. The eastern part of Khan Younis is now under the control of the occupation forces and has been evacuated of its residents, resulting in an almost deserted area akin to the city of Rafah.
The western section of Khan Younis remains a site of ongoing military activity, where incursions continue as resistance fighters are pursued. This area, which includes the Al-Mawasi region, is home to nearly one million displaced individuals. Despite ongoing operations, the occupation has not yet established complete control over this western part.
The new corridor is intended to apply pressure on Hamas and influence ceasefire negotiations. Additionally, the Israeli occupation forces are considering transforming the controlled section into a "humanitarian city." This proposed area would serve as a center for Palestinians, providing them with essential services under Israeli or international oversight.
