Jerusalem: The Israeli Knesset's Security Committee has approved a draft law that would allow the execution of Palestinian prisoners, moving it forward for a first reading in the full Knesset on Wednesday.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the approval of this bill comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu endorsed the proposal. The legislation, if enacted, would permit the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners accused of killing Israelis due to "racial motives or hatred."
Israeli media, as cited by the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA), indicated that while the legislative process could be lengthy, Netanyahu's backing might expedite its progression. Far-right minister Itamar Ben Gvir expressed gratitude to the prime minister for his support of the legislation.
The bill originates from coalition agreements between Netanyahu and Ben Gvir in 2022. It specifically targets prisoners accused of racially or hate-motivated crimes against Israelis.
