Baghdad: Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Al-Sudani received NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte to discuss the role of NATO Mission Iraq (NMI), the NATO-Iraq partnership, and the regional security situation. The meeting also focused on NATO's support for the Iraqi armed forces through "advising and capacity-building efforts," as stated by the media office of the prime minister.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the Iraqi government is optimistic about NMI's potential to boost the country's defense industries and enhance readiness against external threats. Al-Sudani expressed these sentiments during the meeting, emphasizing the importance of NATO's involvement.
Secretary-General Rutte highlighted NATO Mission Iraq's contributions since 2018 in enhancing the effectiveness, inclusivity, and sustainability of Iraqi security forces, institutions, and structures. He praised the cooperation between Iraqi partners and NMI's leadership across various domains, including security education, logistics, cyber defense, and good governance.
Rutte further acknowledged the achievements of the NATO-Iraq partnership and expressed commitment to evolving the scope of activities, in alignment with Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity. This evolution aims to support Iraq's ongoing efforts towards achieving lasting security and stability for all its citizens.
The NATO chief, along with Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) US Army General Christopher G. Cavoli, is set to conclude a two-day visit to Iraq later today.
