Iraq Plans to Boost Renewable Energy Share to 30% by 2024

Baghdad: Iraq's Minister of Oil Hayyan Abdul Ghani announced that the nation intends to diversify its energy mix, aiming for a 30-percent incorporation of renewable energy sources by 2024. Speaking at the Baghdad international forum, the minister emphasized that Iraq's approach to energy is intertwined with its environmental and climate commitments.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the minister highlighted Iraq's progress in meeting its commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement, albeit these achievements represent only two percent of the country's voluntary obligations. The Iraqi government's focus on a green building standard is poised to establish a national framework for sustainable construction practices.

The minister also underscored the national priority of associated gas investment, given Iraq's past practices of flaring large quantities of gas. Efforts are currently underway to expand the Basra company gas projects, among others, to fully utilize flared gas by 2030. These initiatives are aimed at reducing carbon emissions and enhancing environmental quality across the nation.
