Iranian VP for Strategic Affairs Resigns

Tehran: Iran’s Vice-President for Strategic Affairs, Mohammad Javad Zarif, has submitted his resignation to President Masoud Pezeshkian, who has yet to respond.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Zarif announced on X that he hoped his departure would remove excuses for those obstructing the “people’s will and the success of the administration.” He mentioned that the head of the judiciary advised him to resign to prevent further pressure on the government, which he accepted immediately.

Zarif previously served as Iran’s Foreign Minister from 2013 to 2021 and was instrumental in negotiations with Western nations, the 2015 nuclear deal, and President Pezeshkian’s election campaign. His resignation comes amid political shifts in Iran, as evidenced by the Iranian parliament’s recent vote to withdraw confidence from Minister of Economy and Finance Abdolnaser Hemmati due to the deteriorating economic situation in the country.
