Vienna: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors commenced its quarterly meeting on Monday at the agency’s headquarters in Vienna, focusing on pivotal topics such as Iran’s nuclear program and global nuclear facility security.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the five-day meeting will include discussions on ongoing verification and monitoring activities in Iran under UN Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015), alongside efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. The Board’s agenda also encompasses reviewing nuclear safety and security, nuclear technological advancements anticipated by 2025, and nuclear programs in North Korea and Syria, with a focus on the implementation of IAEA-imposed safeguards on member states.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi is slated to present two reports on Iran. One report will discuss Iran’s compliance under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), while the other will address monitoring and verification activities as per UN Security Council resolutions. The meeting, conducted in closed session, will also cover Ukraine’s nuclear situation, guarantees for nuclear material transfers under the AUKUS agreement, and matters concerning sovereign equality among member states.
Grossi is expected to conduct a press conference on March 3 to respond to media inquiries, with particular emphasis on the future cooperation between the IAEA and Iran amidst ongoing apprehensions regarding Iran’s nuclear program. In his recent report, Grossi highlighted significant concerns concerning Iran’s failure to provide credible technical explanations for uranium particles discovered at undeclared sites, stressing the necessity of Iran’s commitment to ensuring its nuclear program remains peaceful.
