Historic Moments in Kuwait’s Development and Diplomacy

Kuwait City: Today marks significant milestones in Kuwait's history, with events ranging from legislative achievements to international sports participation and diplomatic incidents. Notably, Amir Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah signed a comprehensive maritime law, which consists of 61 articles aimed at regulating travel on ships and establishing criteria for skippers.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the first parliamentary grilling motion in the country's history was presented by MP Mohammad Ahmad Al-Rushaid in 1963. This motion in the National Assembly targeted the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Abdullah Al-Roudhan, concerning the distribution of 30 housing lots in the Adailiya Area.

In 1967, the Kuwaiti government demonstrated its solidarity with the Palestinian cause by forming committees across all ministries and state departments to collect donations from civil servants to support Palestinians against Zionist aggression.

A tragic diplomatic incident occurred in 1982 when Kuwaiti diplomat Mustafa Mohammad Al-Marzouq was assassinated in New Delhi by the Palestinian faction known as the 'Abu Nidhal Group.' The diplomat was shot four times.

In 1989, Kuwaiti citizen Fawzi Abdulrasool Al-Mjadi was killed in a commando operation against Israeli occupation forces in Nablus. His body was returned as part of a prisoner exchange and was laid to rest in Kuwait in 2008.

The economic landscape saw changes in 2005 with the Kuwait National Petroleum Company signing an agreement to sell 40 fuel stations to the First Fuel Marketing Company for KD 27.7 million. Additionally, Kuwait Oil Company began free gas production in northern Kuwait in 2008, reaching a production milestone of 50 million cubic feet.

In the medical field, 2012 marked a breakthrough when surgeons from Canada and Kuwait successfully removed a brain tumor from a fully conscious patient at Ibn Sina Hospital, a first for the State of Kuwait.

Kuwait also made strides in sports and education. The Kuwait women's football team participated in the Asian Cup qualifiers for the first time in 2013. In 2014, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development signed a KD-nine-million loan agreement to expand a medical college in China.

Media and governance were highlighted in 2015 when the Ministry of Information shut down Al-Watan TV for violating audio-visual laws. Kuwait's international standing was recognized in 2018 when the Food and Agriculture Organization elected the country as Vice President.

In sports, 2021 saw Kuwaiti shooters Mansour Al-Rasheedi and Abdullah Al-Rasheedi win silver and bronze medals at the Arab's Shooting Grand Prix in Egypt. Most recently, in 2022, the Kuwait National Seismic Network registered a five-degree earthquake southwest of the Ahmadi Area.
