Heatwave Scorches Europe as Temperatures Top 40°C

Vienna: An unprecedented and intense heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, has swept across several European countries, driven by the African high-pressure system "Pluto." The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) reported that the heatwave is currently affecting Austria, Germany, Italy, and several Balkan states, and is expected to persist for the next 10 days. In eastern Austria, temperatures could reach up to 38 degrees Celsius by next week, according to weather forecasts.

According to Kuwait News Agency, in Italy, authorities have issued severe heat warnings in more than 20 cities, cautioning that the extreme temperatures could pose health risks even to otherwise healthy individuals.

Meanwhile, in France, officials in Marseille have ordered public swimming pools to open free of charge in an effort to help residents cope with the heat.

In the Iberian Peninsula, temperatures have soared above 42 degrees Celsius in parts of Spain and Portugal, prompting authorities to remain on high alert for potential wildfires.

In the Balkans and Greece, the high temperatures have already triggered fires and emergency alerts in several regions. However, some Greek islands, such as Crete, have been less affected thanks to the cooling effects of sea breezes.

Health officials across the region have urged residents and tourists to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
