Guterres: Gaza is Moral Crisis That Challenges Global Conscience

New york: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres deplored the rampant human rights abuses across the world, notably the ongoing "relentless Israeli onslaught" on Gaza Strip.

According to Kuwait News Agency, in a speech to the Amnesty International Global Assembly via video-link, Guterres highlighted the pressures against human rights and the international systems designed to protect them. He pointed to attacks on the International Criminal Court, the international human rights system, and violations of international law. He mentioned various global conflicts, including the situation in Sudan and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, emphasizing the need for a just and lasting peace based on the UN Charter and international law.

Guterres described the situation in Gaza as a moral crisis, emphasizing the dire conditions faced by humanitarian workers and the local population. He noted the severe impact on children and the struggle for basic needs, such as food. The Secretary-General underscored the United Nations' readiness to scale up humanitarian operations in Gaza, contingent on a ceasefire.

He reported over 1,000 Palestinians killed since May 27 while trying to access food, and called for immediate actions including a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and unimpeded humanitarian access. Guterres also reiterated the need for concrete steps towards a two-State solution.

Commending Amnesty International's ongoing efforts in human rights protection, Guterres reflected on the organization's historical impact and encouraged continued perseverance in the struggle for justice and equality. He concluded by urging collective action to meet the demands of the current global challenges.
