Grounded Oil Tanker in Suez Canal Re-Floats Successfully After Brief Halt

Kuwait city: Naval rescue efforts have managed to deal with an oil tanker, the Komander, which ran aground in the Suez Canal while crossing the waterway, Suez Canal authority head Osama Rabie announced on Tuesday. In a statement, Rabie affirmed traffic resumed normally from both sides.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the grounding incident occurred when a malfunction was reported at 12:30 pm local time. The Suez Canal's main navigation monitoring center immediately dispatched five locomotives to the site. The efforts led to the vessel re-positioning itself and floating again within 30 minutes, allowing normal operations to resume by 1:00 p.m.

Rabie emphasized the Suez Canal's capability to handle such situations promptly, crediting the professional teams and technical resources at the authority's disposal. The statement also noted that about 34 ships, with a total load of 1.4 million tons, successfully crossed the canal from both sides on the day of the incident.
