Berlin: The German Government on Tuesday applauded US President Donald Trump's decision to send additional weapons to Ukraine. Chancellor Fredriech Merz emphasized Germany's commitment to ensuring that Kyiv receives the necessary arms to continue its defense against Russian forces.
According to Kuwait News Agency, a statement from the German Government highlighted Chancellor Merz's support for the agreement announced by the US Administration in collaboration with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on Monday. This agreement involves the provision of new weapon shipments to Ukraine.
Chancellor Merz expressed Germany's intention to play a significant role in this initiative, describing the agreement as a critical step. He noted that he had discussed the matter multiple times with President Trump. Merz emphasized that aiding Kyiv's defense efforts aligns with both European and German interests, asserting that strengthening Ukraine is essential to increasing pressure on Russia and encouraging negotiations for a fair resolution.
The US-NATO agreement outlines that European nations will purchase American arms, including advanced anti-missile Patriot systems, to supply Ukraine. Since the beginning of his second term, President Trump has aimed to address the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. However, due to perceived non-cooperation from Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump appears more inclined to enhance Ukraine's military capabilities to press Moscow towards negotiations.
The conflict traces back to February 2014, when Russian forces entered Ukraine, labeling it a "special operation." The situation escalated as Russian troops occupied Ukrainian territories predominantly inhabited by Russian-speaking populations.
