GCC Secretary-General: Escalating Challenges Facing Our Countries are True Test of Our Ability to Protect Our Achievements

Riyadh: Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jasem Albudaiwi stated that 'the escalating challenges facing our countries are no longer a passing circumstance, but rather a true test of our ability to protect our achievements and ensure the continued efficiency and stability of our vital sectors.'

According to Saudi Press Agency, this statement was made during the GCC secretary-general's address at the extraordinary meeting of the Committee of the GCC Ministers of Tourism. The meeting was conducted via video conference and chaired by Bahraini Minister of Tourism Fatima Al Sairafi, with the participation of other GCC ministers of tourism.

At the start of the meeting, Albudaiwi expressed that the gathering is occurring at a significant time as the GCC countries face Iranian aggression. He highlighted that this escalation demands a shift from traditional coordination to enhanced integration and proactive response, particularly because the tourism sector is a crucial component for economic sustainability in the GCC region.

Albudaiwi emphasized the importance of the tourism industry, noting that the GCC countries have become global tourist destinations, which significantly contributes to their economic diversification. However, current developments are impacting travel trends and the stability of tourism-related markets.

He urged for increased coordination and joint efforts to ensure sustainable growth in tourism, preserve its achievements, and bolster its resilience against future challenges. Statistics from the Gulf Statistical Center for 2024 were presented, showing over 72 million tourists visiting the GCC, generating nearly $120 billion in revenue.

However, due to military tensions in the region, a decline in tourist numbers is anticipated, potentially reducing visitors by 8 to 19 million and causing revenue losses between $13 and $32 billion. Albudaiwi pointed out that the GCC's experience in overcoming crises is a testament to their capacity for effective integration and maintaining stability across sectors.

He concluded by emphasizing the meeting's role in understanding and addressing these challenges, and the importance of collaborative efforts to rejuvenate tourism momentum, unify media strategies, and promote the GCC as a secure and attractive tourist destination.
