French begin voting in 2nd round of parliamentary elections

French citizens started early on Sunday heading to polling stations to elect MPS in the second round of parliamentary elections marked with heated competition among 1,148 nominees in 577 constituencies.

President Emmanuel Macron’s party, “La R?©publique En Marche,” is facing a serious challenge, the prospect of winning, or not, a majority in the national assembly, to assrt his recent victory, winning the presidential post.

Macron’s “ensemble” alliance is facing the left-wing coalition in the race to the seats, with his political arch foe, Jean-Luc Melenchon, leading the competitors. The latter aspires to dominate the legislative house and coerce Macron into establishing a ruling cohabitation government.

The first round of the legislative elections was held last Sunday. Official results showed that Macron’s camp edged higher vis a vis the left-wing foes — with statistics showing a marginal advance by 25.66 percent to 25.75 percent of the votes in favor of the president.

The national assembly comprises 577 seats, including 11 for representatives of French nationals living abroad.

Up to 48.7 citizens are eligible to vote in today’s elections.
