Brussels: The European Union condemned unilateral steps taken by Israel granting itself broader powers to exercise control over the occupied West Bank, affirming that such measures are counterproductive and contravene international law.
According to Saudi Press Agency, in a joint statement, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka €¦ uica, and Commissioner for Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib expressed concern that 'the new steps risk undermining ongoing international efforts aimed at achieving stability and peace in the region.'
The statement further emphasized that 'the new measures approved by the Israeli security cabinet regarding the West Bank are counterproductive and inconsistent with international law,' reiterating the EU's longstanding position of non-recognition of Israel's sovereignty over the territories occupied since June 1967, in line with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
It also warned that decisions affecting the implementation of the Hebron Protocol between Israel and the Palestinian Authority could jeopardize the 'sensitive status quo at religious sites.'
