EU Targets Moldova Destabilizers with New Sanctions

Brussels: The European Council announced the imposition of restrictive measures on seven individuals and three entities for activities threatening the sovereignty and independence of Moldova, as well as its democratic framework and stability.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the Council's press release detailed that these measures target associates of Moldovan businessman Ilan Shor. Shor had previously faced EU sanctions for his role in the illegal financing of political parties and incitement of violence in Moldova. The newly sanctioned individuals are linked to successor entities of a banned party, with some involved in vote-buying during presidential elections and the 2024 EU accession referendum, as well as bribing politicians.

The sanctions also affect "A7," a company linked to Moscow, for its attempts to influence the 2024 presidential election and referendum. Additionally, the political bloc "Victory/Pobeda," created by Ilan Shor, was designated for spreading disinformation and engaging in vote-buying. The Cultural Educational Centre of Moldova was also listed for its role in interfering with this year's presidential elections.

With these actions, the number of individuals sanctioned by the EU for activities destabilizing Moldova has increased to 23, alongside five designated entities. Sanctions include asset freezes and a ban on making funds or economic resources available to the listed parties. Additionally, a travel ban prevents the sanctioned individuals from entering or transiting through EU member states.
