Brussels: The European Union (EU) declared its unwavering support for Denmark following the United States' decision to appoint a special envoy to Greenland, a territory under Danish sovereignty. Denmark currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU.
According to Kuwait News Agency, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa emphasized on X that Arctic security remains a priority for the EU, and they aim to collaborate with allies and partners in this regard. They highlighted the importance of territorial integrity and sovereignty, describing them as fundamental principles of international law that hold significance not only for the EU but also for nations worldwide. Von der Leyen and Costa reiterated the EU's complete solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, also expressed support on X, affirming that Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. She emphasized that any changes to Greenland's status should be decided by Greenlanders and Danes alone. Kallas further stated that the EU expects all partners to respect each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, adhering to international commitments including those outlined in the United Nations Charter and the North Atlantic Treaty.
