EU Reaffirms Commitment to Iraq’s Security and Reform Support


Brussels: EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting Iraq’s stability, focusing on security, reform, and governance, during the fourth EU-Iraq Cooperation Council meeting. Kallas emphasized that Iraq is a valued partner, with close cooperation on energy, security, and migration.



According to Kuwait News Agency, Kallas praised the EU’s assistance mission’s role in aiding Iraqi authorities to strengthen the rule of law, civilian administration, and security sector reform, which has helped curb the resurgence of Daesh. She highlighted that the current discussions are focusing on public services and economic progress, reflecting Iraq’s improving situation. Kallas also noted the importance of the upcoming Iraqi elections, emphasizing the need for them to be peaceful, inclusive, and transparent, with the EU participating as an independent observer at Iraq’s request.



Kallas acknowledged Iraq’s election to the United Nations Human Rights Council as a symbol of progress and an opportunity to build upon. She stressed that protecting human rights remains a cornerstone of the EU-Iraq relationship. The EU’s commitment to continuing support for Baghdad was reaffirmed, emphasizing the necessity of tangible results from the Iraqi government’s reform agenda to meet citizens’ aspirations for better governance and opportunities.



On the topic of resuming oil exports from the Kurdistan region, Kallas stated that the EU aims to diversify its energy sources and develop balanced partnerships with various partners. She confirmed that the EU’s election observation mission would be on the ground on 11 November, with security being a top priority, expressing hope that the elections would strengthen stability and democracy in the region.



Kallas commended the ongoing reforms by the Iraqi government, noting that cooperation has expanded beyond security to include energy, digital transformation, and civil reforms. She concluded by reaffirming the EU’s commitment to supporting Iraq in ensuring its security, stability, and sustainable development for its people.
