Brussels: EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas stated on Tuesday that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is extremely dire, emphasizing the urgent need for full and immediate access to humanitarian aid. Speaking ahead of an EU defense ministers meeting, Kallas noted that the Israeli government has allowed only a limited amount of aid into Gaza, describing it as "a drop in the ocean." She stressed that thousands of aid trucks remain stuck at the border and underscored the critical need for this aid to reach civilians.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Kallas also revealed that the Dutch Foreign Minister has proposed a review of Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which defines respect for human rights as a core element of the partnership. She indicated that EU officials will discuss the proposal but acknowledged that it will be a difficult and complex discussion.
On Syria, Kallas expressed hope that EU foreign ministers would agree later in the day to ease certain economic sanctions as a humanitarian gesture aimed at alleviating suffering. Regarding the war in Ukraine, Kallas reiterated the EU's call for a complete and unconditional ceasefire, highlighting that Kyiv has been ready to commit for over two months. She warned that if Russia continues to refuse, the EU will increase its pressure.
Kallas also called on the United States to take firm action should Russia remain non-compliant, noting that Washington has promised consequences in such a scenario. "We want to see those consequences, also from the US side," she added. Kallas confirmed that the EU would approve its 17th package of sanctions against Russia today, and that work is already underway on a stronger and more impactful package as part of ongoing efforts to pressure the Kremlin.
