EU Defense Summit Highlights United Front Against Russian Tactics

Copenhagen: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen asserted at the EU defense summit hosted by Denmark that Russia will not succeed in sowing division within the European Union. The summit, addressing incidents of mysterious drone flights in several European countries such as Estonia and Denmark, commenced with strong statements from EU leaders.

According to Kuwait News Agency, von der Leyen emphasized that this pattern of behavior is coming from Russia and aims to test and divide EU societies. She firmly stated, “We will not let this happen.” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, whose nation currently holds the EU’s rotating presidency, urged Europe to bolster its response to what she termed Russia’s “hybrid war,” highlighting the significant security challenges reminiscent of the post-World War II era.

French President Emmanuel Macron contributed to the discourse by highlighting the confrontation with Russia, citing Moscow’s tactics such as disinformation campaigns, cyberattacks, and airspace violations. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas echoed these concerns, pointing out the extensive damage Russia is causing in Ukraine and advocating for a reparations loan backed by frozen Russian assets to assist Ukraine in its defense efforts.

Furthermore, the European Commission has approved a defense spending package, including a 150 billion euro loan scheme, predominantly benefiting eastern European countries. Brussels is urging member states to collaborate on four flagship projects aimed at enhancing the EU’s defense capabilities: a drone wall, strengthening the eastern flank, missile defenses, and a space shield.
