EU Chief Congratulates South Korea’s Newly Elected President

Brussels: President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen extended on Wednesday her congratulations to South Korea's newly elected President, Lee Jae-myung, highlighting the strength of EU-Korea relations and expressing optimism for deeper cooperation.

According to Kuwait News Agency, von der Leyen conveyed her congratulations in a post on X, expressing her eagerness to enhance the robust connection between Europe and the Republic of Korea. She emphasized the partnership's foundation on shared values and mutual interests, including trade, innovation, and defense. Von der Leyen articulated her vision for both entities to advocate for a rules-based global order, fair trade, and an open Indo-Pacific.

Von der Leyen also mentioned the significance of the upcoming EU-Republic of Korea Summit as a pivotal moment to reinforce bilateral ties and capitalize on the momentum of collaboration in tackling global issues.

Lee Jae-myung, leader of South Korea's Democratic Party, emerged victorious in the recent presidential election, outpacing his conservative opponent, Kim Moon-soo.
